Abijah Joslin's Service to His Country

1 It was while in Ashburnham, that he was made Captain of the Militia at a town meeting on Sept. 13, 1774, and at the same time was chosen a member of the Committee of Correspondence. This committee served to unify the Colonies by encouraging communication from seaport towns such as Boston and New York to the more separated communities inland. Information from Boston such as Paul Revere carried was passed by the Committee of Correspondence from town to town. A signal such as church bells or alarm guns would alert farmers to come from their fields to receive news. The Committee of Correspondence continued until the Continental Congress ended.

Following the disbandment of the Committee of Correspondence, the Committee of Safety was established. Abijah Joslin was also a member of the Committee of Safety. The Committee of Safety was empowered to call out the militia. Certain well trained members of the militia were able to quickly mobilize and became known as Minute Men. Abijah Joslin was a selectman of the Minute Men.

During the Revolutionary War it is known that Abijah Joslin was in the Company of Capt. Jonathan Wood’s Company as part of the Regiment of Col. Converse. He was stationed in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Following the war, Abijah Joslin moved to New York State where he appears on the federal census of 1800 living in Westmoreland (now known as Verona), New York. Abijah's son Nahum had already moved to Verona and is considered one of Verona's first settlers. Abijah remained in Verona, New York, until his death Sept. 1, 1811. He was a farmer and is buried in the Verona Cemetery.

Several Revolutionary War letters from Abijah Joslin are known to exist.
