Biography

The origins of Mary Jordan, wife of Nathaniel Basse, are presently unknown.

The family bible record belonging to John Basse gives the date of marriage of Nathaniel Basse and Mary Jordan [sic] as 21 May 1613.[1] This marriage date is also found in Boyd's Inhabitants of London.[2] While this gives no location, it is presumed the marriage occurred in England. It is important to note that this marriage date precludes this Mary Jordan from being the Mary daughter of ancient planter Samuel Jordan for that Mary was born 1621 in Virginia.

Some frequently seen false information should be mentioned. She is not the Mary Basse baptized 25 Jan 1595 at St Gabriel Fenchurch, London as that is the sister of Nathaniel Basse. That she is born in 1590 as shown on this profile is conjecture.

There is presently no known documentation that Mary came to the New World and many believe that Nathaniel Basse had no issue based upon a court deposition given by his two sisters (who may have been shepherding their inheritance, see Nathaniel's profile). However, family tradition and some circumstantial evidence points toward there being a number of children.

Her date and place of death are unknown. That she died following childbirth in 1630 and was buried at St Alphage, City of London comes from an unsourced Find-a-Grave profile which is unfortunately and incorrectly indexed as fact by Family Search. The burial records of St Alphage show no burials for anyone with the surname Basse or Bass in 1628, 1629 or 1630.[3] Nathaniel Basse was buried in the Church of St Alphage in 1654.

I agree that this profile is misconnected somehow. However we know Samuel Jordan had a daughter Mary so we need to keep that somehow. And we know that Nathaniel Basse married Mary Jordan it just apparently was not the one that is Samuel Jordan's daughter. So if you can disconnect this Mary Jordan from Samuel but keep her as the wife of Nathaniel and let Samuel have his daughter born 1621 restored then all would be well. Somebody might look around for a different Jordan who could be this Mary's father because her maiden name WAS Jordan. In reading the profile of Nathaniel Basse, where it seems much after a certain point is conjecture, do we have any documentation of a marriage to Mary Jordan?

I will disconnect Samuel as father...that won't effect her connection to Nathaniel Basse although that seems tenuous from what is on his profile. I haven't looked up the bible citation above yet.

I will put a note on this profile so the father is not again attached.

Propose that this person be detached as daughter of Samuel Jordan, now managed by Virginia Project. If there are objections, please respond to this Comment. Thanks.

There's also the date of birth issue. Samuel was born about 1586 so could not have a daughter born 1590.

The only daughter of Samuel Jordan named Mary was born in 1621 in Virginia. This is documented. Is there any documentation that the 1621 daughter of Samuel named Mary was married to this person? Is so, the marriage date of 1613 and place as England are inaccurate.

Jourdon-6 and Jourdan-51 appear to represent the same person because: Clear Duplicate

Jourdan-51 and Jourdon-7 do not represent the same person because: These are not the same person, even the spelling of the last name are different.
