Anne Julien was a Fille du Roi or Daughter of the King, part of a program of Louis XIV to promote settlement of women to New France and thereby encourage men to settle there too. The program was to foster family growth and the birth of children in New France.
Birth
Anne Julien, daughter of Pierre Julien and Marie Pépien or de Pien, was born about 1651, in the parish of Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France.[1]
Migration
Anne Julien migrated from France to New France as a Daughter of the King, with a gift from the king, to marry one of the settlers. She would have arrived in Québec city on 3 July 1668 either aboard the ship La Nouvelle-France or another, the ship is uncertain,[2] as she married late that year, and the Filles du Roi tended to select a husband and marry fairly quickly.
Marriage and Family
On 12 Nov 1668, in the parish of Notre-Dame of Montreal, Anne Jullien, daughter of the late Pierre Jullien and Marie de Pien from the parish of St-Germain de Lauxerois in 1st arrondissement of Paris, France married Nicolas Choquet, son of Nicolas Choquet and Claudine Groet of Amiens in Picardy, France. The banns for the marriage had been read once without objection and the other two readings had been waived. The marriage was performed by the priest G. Perot. The witnesses were Jacques Le Moyne, the principal churchwarden of the parish, and Sieur Michel Messier, seigneur of Cap de La Trinité[3] and Sieur Gabriel Celle duClos. Anne, the witnesses and the priest signed the marriage record. Nicolas declared that he could not sign, probably because he could not read or write.[4][5]
Nicolas' captain, Sidrac-Michel Dugué de Boisbriand had received a land grant on Ile Sainte-Thérèse, a large island in the St-Lawrence River opposite Varennes, about 10 miles downstream of Montreal. Most of the soldiers who stayed received land near that granted to their leaders. True to that pattern, Nicolas and Anne settled down to farm and raise a family on Ile Sainte-Thérèse. The 1681 census reports Nicolas owned two arpents of land and that Nicolas, age 30, and his wife Anne, age 30, had four children living with them on their farm on Ile Sainte-Thérèse. [6]
But Nicolas and Anne did not confine themselves to farming. Several notarized transactions between 1672 and 1687, show Nicolas also acquired additional land at Cap-de-la-Trinité in Varennes, which included a bakery and principal residence. In 1701, Nicolas acquired 160 arpents of land in Ste-Marguerite Seigniory, between Cap-de-la-Trinité and Verchères from Marguerite Messier, wife of Pierre Lesueur, seigneur of Sainte-
Marguerite.[7]
Nicolas and Anne had ten children. The first was born in Québec city. All the others were born on Ile Sainte-Thérèse.[7][1][8]
Julien, born 14 Sep and baptized 16 Sep 1669
Pierre, baptized 12 Nov 1671 who died 11 days later
Catherine, baptized 13 Dec 1672 who died at age 15
Jeanne, born 7 Aug 1675 and baptized 16 Aug 1675
Marie Thérèse, born 31 Aug and baptized 1 Sep 1678
Nicolas, baptized 13 Nov 1681
Marguerite, baptized 4 Feb 1685 who died 5 days later[9];
Marie Madeleine, born 22 July 1686
Pierre, born 10 April 1689 who died at age 6 months
Anne Julien died sometime after her husband's death in 1722 and her daughter Catherine's second marriage in September of 1728, where she is not cited deceased, although this may be a clerical error, her husband also not listed deceased on that marriage, despite known decease.[10] The last record found which actually cites Anne Julien present was the baptism of her grand-daughter Anne Hébert, through her daughter Thérèse, on 12 June 1701 in Varennes, where she was godmother of the child.[11]
