Biography

On May 9, 1741, David Kaufman paid 70 pounds Pennsylvania currency to purchase a track of land beginning on the north side of Hawkbill Run in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The deed was recorded by the seller, Henry Crum of St Mark's Parish, Orange county, Virginia. In the Virginia muster roll for 1755, Captain William Bethel lists "David Coffman" as delinquent. This is the year of Braddock's defeat, during the French and Indian War. Apparently, he left the Colony for a safer region about this time -- possibly to South Carolina.

Although no Will or intestate papers appear for David in Pennsylvania, Virginia or the Carolina's, Davids's heir was his eldest son, Martin. Lord Fairfax gave to Martin Kaufman (aka Coffman) of Shenandoah County, Virginia, heir at law of David Kaufman (aka Coffman) desceased, a tract bounded as by a survey thereof dated April 18, 1751 and made for David Kaufman by George Hume. Martin inherited 282 acres on March 22, 1779, and 337 acres on March 23, 1779.

In 1783, Martin, who became known as "Hawkbill Martin" to distinguish him from another Martin Kaufman living in the vicinity, deeded 90 acres to Christian Kaufman. This is part of the original tract of land gotten from Henry Crum.
