Biography

Birth and parents : Details of Jacob's birth and origins are uncertain. An unsourced Findagrave entry records that Jacob was born 8 Jan 1746 in Virginia. [1] The Kauffman genealogy tentatively identifies him as the same Jacob Kauffman who was listed in Manchester Twp, York Co., PA, fined for refusing military service during the Revolution, and who was believed to be the son of John Kauffman. [2] However, this is highly speculative and inconsistent with John's theorised birthdate of 1732, and unlikely to be correct.

Marriage and children : Similarly, it is speculated that he may have married Elizabeth Holdiman, daughter of Christian Holdeman of Mountjoy Twp, Lancaster, PA (whose will named his son-in-law as Jacob Kauffman). [2]

Land records : The Kauffman genealogy reports, without specifying a county or state, that Jacob purchased land in 1783 from Michael Warren and his wife Catherine and in 1789 from Ezekiel Harrison and from Kester Wolvey; also that in 1789 he was taxed for 106 acres. He appears on an unidentified list in 1788 with a son Christian over 16 and 4 horses, and in 1792 with a son Martin over 16 and two horses. [2]

Death and burial : Jacob died on 20 Apr 1796 in Linville, Rockingham County, Virginia. He may have been buried in the Mennonite Cemetery. [2][1] The executors of his will were Jacob Reffe and Jacob Bowman. [2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:

Coffman-2290 and Coffman-1050 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth, death and spouse (slightly different spelling) information.
Kauffman-353 and Kauffman-309 appear to represent the same person because: Though Kauffman-353 lacks information, it appears to represent the same person as Kauffman-309.

This Jacob Kauffman is tentatively assigned to the "KFM" R1b-L188 haplogroup lineage. A descendant of Christian Coffman is confirmed to be part of this extended family tree. As of this writing the immigrant has not been identified. There are currently 4 other colonial period immigrants (Amish, Mennonite, Reformed Lutheran) who have been identified as being part of the extended family tree. Proposed direct male descendants of this Jacob and other colonial period immigrants are encouraged to test at FamilyTreeDNA.com to establish which several families they are associated with.
