Biography

Jacob Kauffman was born in 1721, in what is today Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He was a son of Frederick Kauffmann (1689-- ) and Regina Barbara Metzger (1690-1725).

Birth 02 Dec 1721 in Stuttgart. Johann Jacob is the son of "Cabinets-Cantzley-Cancellist" Johann Friedrich Kaufmann and Regina Barbara.[1]

  • JACOB KAUFFMANN Born December 2, 1721 -- Wurttemberg, Germany Arrived in Philadelphia, PA, September 15, 1749 on The Phoenix, immediately settled in the St Michael's area. Died 1804 - Buried here with his wife Anna Maria Kauffmann. Jacob was a clerk, soldier, musician, farmer and miller. Charter member of St Michael's Lutheran Church. Immigration: 15 Sep 1749 arrived at port of Philadelphia aboard the Phoenix. He came along with Christian and Joseph Kauffman, who may have been his brothers. Indeed, one of Jacob's brothers--probably Joseph--was killed by Indians.

Jacob Kaufmann, son of Johann Frederick Kauffmann, was a member of the Palatinate of of the Rhine, a region in southwestern Germany. Jacob immigrated to Berks county, Pennsylvania, where he resided in Bern Township at the time of the American Revolutionary War.

Jacob Kauffman is credited with having rescued the injured 3-year-old Frederick Moyer from a ditch where his father threw him during the massacre of the Moyer family June 29, 1754. Jacob Kauffman's tract of 700 acres joined the Moyer farm. Kauffman raised the boy himself while overseeing his late father's land until Frederick Jr was old enough to farm it himself.

Military: Jacob Kauffman had military experience in Germany prior to emigrating to Berks County. He trained colonists in military maneuvers used in combating Indian warriors. Kauffman, a farmer, was among the original members of St. Michael’s church.

Jacob took the oath of Allegiance, at Berks county, in 1778 and paid supply tax, in 1779. [2]

Kauffman's Mill still stands in Upper Bern. There are photographs of it that may be seen here and here.

Jacob died about 4 Mar 1804, in Berks county, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Saint Michaels Cemetery. There is a photograph of his headstone on his Find A Grave memorial here The epitaph reads:
