Biography

On 13 Feb 1866 at Valencia in the Registrar's District of Valencia and Union of Caherciveen in the County of Kerry, the marriage took place of John Keating, 22, a bachelor and labourer of Tinnis Lr, Valencia, son of Laurence Keating, labourer, and Hanora McCarthy, 26, a spinster and servant of Tinnis Lr, Valencia, daughter of Daniel McCarthy, weaver (deceased), witnessed by Michl Murphy, Thomas Murphy.[1][2]

John Keating appeared in the 1901 census of Ireland at House 7 in Tinnies Lower West, Valentia, Kerry, age 60, born Kerry, occupation general labourer, as head of family.[3]

John Keating died 12 Apr 1907 at West Lower Tenis, age 69, married, occupation: labourer. The death was registered by Thos Murphy, present at death, of West Lower Tenis, Valencia, on 17 Apr 1907.[4]

In 1916 Michael Keating of Corabeg submitted a request for an extract of the 1851 census. The request documents that he was living in Coarha Beg with parents Lawrence Keating and Julia Sugrue. The extract of return states they were married in 1836, no son Michael present but with children Mary 14, Keate 12, John 9, Patk 7 and Norry 3.[5]. The same father's name and close ages suggest that this John is the same as the above marriage.

Research Notes

There were at least two men named Laurence/Lawrence Keating with sons named John in Valentia in the mid-19th century. It is possible that Laurence Keating of Coarha Beg and Lawrence Keating of West Lower Tinnies fathers of John Keating b.c.1850 and John Keating b.c.1842 have been confused. I have updated the profiles with best estimates based on the locations of the two Johns rather than their ages. Millard-1402 08:22, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
