Biography

(Information provided by Contributor# 47150554) Mrs. Rachel Rowan passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.W. Spessard in Ainsworth, Iowa, March 13, 1925, aged 82 yrs. Mrs. Rowan has been in poor health since the death of her husband which occurred Oct. 30, 1924. After his death she made her home with her daughter where everything was done to restore her to her health which was broken by the constant care given to her invalid husband, but which was to no avail.

Rachel Keegan, daughter of Patrick and Mary Keegan, was born Aug. 12, 1842 at Dover, Indiana. At the age of 7 years she was left an orphan, her father dying when she was quite young and the mother, a brother, and sister died with the cholera during the cholera epidemic of 1849. She was then reared in the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Stone where she was given every advantage which was available in those pioneer days, and when she was always recognized as a member of the family by the "six" Stone boys who knew her as a sister.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Rowan Dec. 25, 1861, and almost 63 years was spent together when the husband was called home.

There were two daughters born to this union; Mira, wife of Lincoln Carll, deceased and Mae, wife of Dr. E.W. Spessard of Ainsworth. There are four grandchildren; Cloice D. Carll of Plru, Calif., and Arlene Kurtz of Washington, Milburn and Wanda Spessard of Ainsworth and three great grand children and one niece.

Mrs. Rowan united with the United Brethren Church when quite young and later transferring her membership to the United Presbyterian Church where she remained a consistent member to the end. Her life has been an exemplary one of kindness and motherly love and she had many friends which was in evidence during her last days by flowers and dainties sent to the sickroom. Funeral services will be held at the Unted Presbyterian Church Sabbath at 2:30 PM. The service will be conducted by her pastor Rev. McCrory assisted by Rev. Moore of the Methodist Church.
