Biography

Jubal & Sarah Keen probably had at least five children. Their son Shadrack is proven to be theirs by his death record. Jubal was named as the head of household on the Federal Census of 1810 in Clark Sq., Ward 2, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, as Tubal Keen, a male aged over 45 years with a household containing one male and one female under 10 years, two males and one female aged 10-15, and one female 26-44. The enumeration suggests four other children in the household besides Shadrack who would have been age 14.

In his application for a military pension on 03 April 1818 at Boston, he deposed:

"I Tubal Keen of Boston in the County of Suffolk MA, labourer of the age of sixty three years a native citizen & resident in the US and applicant for a pension under the law of the US - do depose on oath declare that in the month of January in the year 1781 I enlisted as a mid-shipman in the Navy of the US and was attached to the Deane Frigate afterwards called the Hague under Captain Samuel Nickerson. That I served two years and two months in that capacity and upon the declaration of peace I was honorably discharged - our first cruise was on the West India coast when we captured Navy prizes - as was also our second cruize Captain Manly was commander at the time when peace took place - my discharge was destroyed by fire in a house which was [hired?] by me about seven years since, & which was burned to the ground in Boston. I further testify & declare that my circumstances are much reduced and I am in extreme poverty and in need of aid from my country for support." [signed] Tubal Keen [declaration dated 3 apr 1818 at Boston]

"I well know that the foregoing declaration to be true as the deponent was under my command as Surgeon of the Ship."
[signed] P.S. Meadary,
Surgeon US Navy
(declaration dated 3 Apr 1818 Boston)[1]
