Biography

DAR Patriot - A214209


John Keen was born in 1756 in Johnston Co., North Carolina to parents unknown at this time. His year of birth is based on family tree and census estimations. No actual source found.

Revolutionary War: The Pension Application of John Keen (W 7959) filed in Anson Co, North Carolina in 1845 states that John Keen was a private during the War of the Revolution in the North Carolina Militia. He served one tour of duty as a substitute for Joshua Lamb, a tour of 3 months. He was afterwards drafted for six months and served his time out. He served under Captain Johnson.

Marriage and Children: John married Elizabeth Boyet (a widow with one daughter**) in April 1786 in Johnston Co., NC. This marriage information is referenced in the Application for Pension Benefits as are the names of their children:

Elizabeth - born April --, 1792 (paper torn)
--- (paper torn) - born June 18, 1794 (a daughter) (Now known to be Comfort Keen)
Mourning - born January 5, 1797
Keziah - born March 14, 1799

The name John Keen appears on the US Census for Johnston Co., NC in 1790, 1800, and 1820. These census only show the number of family members, no specific names, etc. Based on the family numbers listed, one can assume these belong to this family.

Death: According to the Pension Application cited, John Keen died August 17, 1824 leaving Elizabeth, a widow with many children. Burial place is unknown but likely in Johnston Co., NC near where the family lived.[1]
