Biography

Mournen was born in 1797. She is the daughter of John Keen and Elizabeth Boyet Unknown. Her birth date is written in the Pension application of her father, John Keen.

Mournen comes to Anson County with her family around 1820. It appears she never marries, but seems to care for many family members through the years.

RESEARCH TRAIL -

1850 US Census - Lanesboro - Living with her sister Sarah Watson. Also listed is Thomas Faulkner (b. 1833). He is probably their nephew, son of their deceased sister. The next family listed after them is her sister, Keziah (and Moses) Horn. After them are Edy and Mournen Flowers, who would be nieces, daughters of her oldest sister, Mary Flowers.

1860 US Census - Lanesboro - still living with her sister, Sarah. Also listed are two young men, William Meeks (21) and Riley Baker (12). Not clear who Riley Baker is, but Mournen leaves her land to him in her LW&T. Unfortunately, Riley dies in the Civil War.

1870 US Census - Lanesboro - living with her nephew, Stephen Boyt and his large family.

1880 US Census - Lanesboro - still living with Stephen Boyet. Named his Aunt.

Death - according the legal papers found, Mournen Keen died on 23 Dec 1881. Estate records filed in 1882 list Stephen Boyett and the children of her sister, Litha Davis, as heirs of her estate. It is thought she is buried in the Horn Cemetery - now unmarked.[1]
