Martha was probably born before 1700, likely in Virginia. She is supposed to have married a Mr. Keene before marrying James Neville, who began purchasing land in what later became Albemarle County in 1725. She probably passed away before 1740, by which time her husband had remarried in what was still Goochland County, Virginia.
Martha name varies according to various family traditions:
Baker-53780 St. Anne's Parish and Albemarle County were not established until 1744.[1]
Baker-53780 Mrs. John Hart Wilson states that James Neville married 1st the "Widow Keene". James later married Lucy Thomas, and some of their elder daughters estimated marriage dates were less than 16 years after Albemarle County was formed. Therefore "Widow Keene" should have died at least by around 1740 in Goochland County.[2]
