Biography

Hannah KEENE: A Wife & Mother with an Unknown Past in Mid-18th Century Wingrave, Buckinghamshire

The KEENE family has a history that dates at least as far back as the early 16th century in Wingrave, if not earlier[1][2]. Hannah KEENE may be a descendant of the earliest known KEENE residents of WIngrave, yet how has yet to be determined. Hannah first appears in Wingrave with her marriage to John MORTIMER on the 10th of November 1769 in the parish church of Saints Peter & Paul[3], and makes further appearances in the parish registers six more times with the baptism records of her children. Following the baptisms of her children, Hannah disappears from the parish registers. A record of her burial could not be found, which hinders placing Hannah firmly in Wingrave's history, for a burial record would have supplied Hannah's age and allowed a calculation of her year of birth and led to her record of baptism. While it is reasonable to presume that Hannah would have been born roughly around the same time as her husband John, the parish registers of Wingrave complicate the puzzle of Hannah's identity by offering baptisms for two Hannah KEENEs born to different sets of parents in the early 1740s[4]. Either baptism could belong to known ancestor Hannah KEENE, and without further information, Hannah's parents cannot be definitively identified, and consequently, the KEENE family cannot be further researched.
