Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

John Keeney was the son of William Keeney and Agnes (Unknown) Keeney. Two records exist that help establish his date of birth. The first is the record of his baptism at the First Church of Boston, which states that he was "about 3 years and 10 Monethes old" when he was baptized there on May 31, 1646,[1] which would mean that he was born about July 1642. The second is the entry for his family in History of New London, which states that he was 21 in 1662 (presumably based on his testimony to that effect in a deposition), which would mean that he was born about 1641.[2] Since his baptismal record was both more proximate to his date of birth and more precise than the record of his age at his 1662 deposition, it is probably the better record for accurately estimating John's date of birth. John's date of birth should therefore be estimated as about July 1642.

Since John's parents were probably living in Marblehead, Massachusetts in July 1642,[3] John was probably born there.

Residency in Marblehead, Gloucester and New London

As discussed in his father's profile, John and his family lived in Marblehead until sometime in 1645-1648, then moved to Gloucester where they lived until about 1650, when they moved to New London as part of the "Cape Ann Company."

First Marriage and Children

John married, first, Sarah Douglas in New London in October 1661.[4][5][2] John and Sarah had one child:

  1. Susannah, b. September 6, 1662, bpt. February 26, 1670, m. 1st December 26, 1678 Ezekiel Turner in New London, m. 2d August 20, 1706 Joseph Minor in New London. (See discussion and sources in Susannah's profile.)

John's wife Sarah died on August 4, 1689.[2]

Second Marriage and Children

John married, second, Elizabeth Latham in New London about 1690.[5] John and Elizabeth had the following children, all born in New London:

  1. Elizabeth, b. October 27, 1690, m. 1st October 7, 1708 David Culver in New London, m. 2d before 1732 William Waterhouse. (See sources and discussion in Elizabeth's profile.)

  6. John, b. February 13, 1699/1700, bpt. February 25, 1699/1700. (See sources and discussion in John's profile.)

John's wife Elizabeth died sometime before February 1703.[6]

Third Marriage

John married, third, widow Naomi (Burdick) Rogers) at New London on February 17, 1703.[7]

John Keeney died in Nahantick (now part of East Lyme), Connecticut on February 3, 1716.[2] His death is reported in Joshua Hempstead's diary entry for that date: "fryd 3d fair. Cold in ye morn.
