Biography

Birth

Thomas Keeney was born in 1781 in Keeney Knob, Greenbrier, Virginia. He was the son of Rev. Jonathan Keeney (1750-1821) and Annie Poets (1754-1785). He died on 6 December 1845 in Holt County, Missouri, USA at the age of 65.

Residences

Thomas Keeney owned land in Cocke County, Tennessee in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He was probably the son of John Keeney who had holdings in Cocke County and Jefferson County Tennessee. They were members of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church in Cocke County and references are made to the family during the period June 1791 to October 1814 in the minutes of this church, which record has been preserved. There is no indiction of the status of Nancy Keeney who joined the church "by experience" 6 June 1812 and the wife of Thomas Keeney is not named when he asks for a letter of dismissal on 1 October 1814 for himself and wife.

We can assume that Thomas Keeney married Nancy Fugate in Cocke Co., Tenn. prior to 11 January 1806 as that is the birthdate of their first child, Martha Keeney.

We can wonder if he found her and married her in some other area. He was a camp-meeting type preacher and wandered. Census reports vary as to the birthplace of Martha Keeney.. sometimes Tenn., sometimes Kentucky.

March 18, 1815 Thomas Keeney and wife were received by letter in to the New Bethel Baptist Church in Fayette Co., Indiana. There are several deeds in Indiana listing Nancy as the wife of Thomas Keeney.

April 1816 Thomas Keeney buys land in Howard Co. Missouri from John O. Banyon taking possession on the first day of Jan. 1817.

Sept. 1816 Ask for letter of dismissal from above church. Deeds selling land in Indiana listing wife Nancy go on into 1817.

1822 Thomas Keeney and wife Nancy are buying land in Saline Co., Missouri. There are numerous transactions during the next ten years which include Nancy, as wife.

1830 census from Arrow Rock Township, Saline, Missouri. See photo. 6 daughters and 1 son are listed in the household. Both Thomas & Nancy are listed in the 1780-1790 category.

Aug. 22 , 1832 The final deed including wife Nancy.

1838 Thomas Keeney was living in Rives Co. (later Henry Co.) and no wife listed in deed there in 1838.

Mar. 1, 1842 Thomas Keeney and wife Lovinney sold land to Henry Nave and were apparently preparing to move to Holt Co. Other documents mentioning Lovviney, as wife.

1846 Thomas Keeney dies in Holt Co. and Lovinia Keeney lists seven daughters as heirs.

This Thomas MAY be the Thomas JR. seen in the Big Pigeon listings and is sometimes associated as the son of Thomas Keeney-467 on some family trees.

More work to be done-May 2017

I'm concerned about the dates of birth of Thomas that you have. There is a record of his brother Hiram Ashley Keeney being born on 10 September 1782 in Jefferson City, Tennessee and on the other side of that is his brother Joseph David born on 19 August 1780 in Jefferson City. The family was still in Virginia until before August 1780. Perhaps Thomas is the transitional child and since he says he was born in Virginia, he was probably born in 1781.
