Research Notes
Tidbits, which come from family tries and are not sourced, needing sourcing: His father served as a private with the Ninth Virginia Regiment, commanded by Capt. (later Col.) John Gibson. William was born during his enlistment, which lasted from 1775 through 1779. William continued that military tradition, serving with the First Ohio Militia during the War of 1812. He was with the troops under General Hull at Detroit, when that stronghold was surrendered to the British forces. This bit refers to James Kelly (1757-1837) who fought as a Private in the American Revolutionary War, serving in the Virginia Militia under Captain David Scott and Colonel John Gibson. This individual is an NSDAR ancestor, Ancestor No. A064210.[8] This connection is not proven, to the best of my knoweldge.Susan DeFoe
