MOSES KELLOGG was born on 1 April 1720, in Northfield, Litchfield Co., CT.[1] He was the eldest of seven children born to Stephen and Abigail (Loomis) Kellogg. While Moses' listed birthplace is given as Connecticut, this could be wrong, as both parents and all his siblings came from Massachusetts. When Moses was thirteen years old, his mother passed away, and Stephen died when Moses was eighteen. Stephen had remarried following Abigail’s passing, and the second wife had brought Moses two half-sisters.
On 30 April 1740, in Westfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, Moses married Mary Belding, fourth child of nine to Stephen and Mindwell (Wright) Belding of Northfield, MA.[2] Mary also lost her father at age thirteen. Moses and Mary would have a total of fourteen children over twenty-six years. Shortly after the birth of the last child, Mary Belding Kellogg died. At least nine of the young ones were probably still at home.
Moses was a farmer and spent his career in a few locations. At one time, he was located between Sheffield and New Marlboro, near the line with Connecticut. During the Revolution, he was found about eleven miles north in Alford, but it may have been reclassified into New York state near Hillsdale. Toward the end of his life, Moses moved over 200 miles to the west to Geneva, NY, between Syracuse and Rochester.[3]
In the first US Census in 1790, Moses was counted in Hadley, Hampshire County, MA with two adult males, one young male and five females.[4] It isn’t believed that Moses remarried in his over 48 years as a widower. He died in May 1815 at the age of 95.
