Biography

1776 Project
Captain John Kellogg served with Hampshire County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Kellogg is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A064440.

John Kellogg was born in 1732. John was a Captain in the Massachusetts Militia under command of Colonel John Moseley as per his DAR record A064440. The DAR lists three marriages: 1) Lucy Ann Terry, 2) Anne Lord and 3) Jemima Wood. [1]

Col John Moseley is a DAR patriot A081985, he lived Westfield, MA

He married first Ann Terry in 1750 - they had two children: Lucy and Infant - it seems likely Ann died in childbirth or shortly thereafter - Infant died at the same time. Inscription on her headstone: "In Memory of Mrs. Anne Wife of Capt John Kellogg Daughter of Ephriam Terry Esq and died 5 Oct 1764 and in the 33 year of her age Also her infant babe lying by her breast." [2]

After her death John married Anne Lord [3]

He passed away in 1806. [4] Find A Grave: Memorial #37524968

Discussion

Lucy Ann Terry-9191 and Anne Terry-2694 appear to be the same person. The only record I could find of a marriage to a Lucy Ann Terry came from a D.A.R. entry for Mary H. Hoadley Gray (54239) in the Lineage Book of the Charter Members of the DAR Vol 055, p. 101. That shows John Kellogg married to Lucy Ann Terry (1732-64), m. 1750. [Ancestry.com. Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011] shows the marriage to be to Ann Terry, not Lucy Ann. The name Lucy in the D.A.R. record may be confused with a daughter, Lucy, or it may have been a nickname.

The Kellogg Genealogy [Hopkins, Timothy. The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New. United States: Sunset Press and photo engraving Company, 1903, v 1, p 95] shows three wives for John Kellogg, Anne Terry, the mother of all his children, Ann Lord, and a Mrs. Jemima Ward. The Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 show the 1750 marriage to Anne Terry and also a marriage to a Mrs. Anne Lord. Online genealogies show her as the daughter Benjamin Lord, but if this was her married name it must refer to an Ann with a different LNAB. Therefore I feel her parents should be considered uncertain. The third wife is shown as Mrs. Jemima Ward. No further information was found.

Anne (Terry) Kellogg and Capt. John Kellogg are shown to have had several children together. Kellogg Genealogy [Hopkins, Timothy. The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New. United States: Sunset Press and photo engraving Company, 1903, v 1, p 95] shows: Ann (b. 18 Oct 1751) Lovisa (b. 22 Aug 1753) Josiah (b. 31 May 1755) Bassorah (b. 22 Sep 1757) Lucy (b. 26 Dec 1759, d. 1 Oct 1763) Aaron (b. 5 Sep 1762) Unknown infant daughter (d. 5 Oct 1764 and buried with her mother)

Terry Genealogy [Terry, Stephen. Notes of Terry Families, in the United States of America. United States: The compiler, 1887, p. 35-36] shows: Ann (b. 18 Oct 1751) Lovisa (b. 22 Aug 1753) Josiah (b. 31 May 1755) Bilsora (b. 22 Sep 1757) Lucy (b. 26 Dec 1759, d. 1 Oct 1763) Aaron (b. 5 Sep 1762) It does not show the infant daughter described on her mother’s gravestone.

As a result I am proposing multiple merges, Kellogg-2850 and Kellogg-1334, as well as Terry-6832, Terry-9191 and Terry-2694. This should consolidate the husbands and wives and combine the currently listed children, Lovisa, Josiah, Ann, and Aaron with Anne as the mother. The additional children should also to be listed and connected to Anne as mother unless any published sources or records show otherwise or the relationship has been disproven elsewhere.
