WHAT IS CORRECT ANCESTRY OF OLIVE KELLOGG, WIFE OF ABEL SMITH AND MOTHER OF WILLIAM ORVILLE SMITH?

Is this Olive the one born in Hebron, CT on 12 Sep 1762 to Moses and Dinah Kellogg or the one born on 15 Feb 1776 in Watertown, CT to Martin Kellogg?

There is a major disagreement about the ancestry of Olive Kellogg, the mother of William Orville Smith and wife of Abel Smith. I have previously followed the line that Archibald R. Bennett suggests is the correct one. I wrote to him on 28 May 1959. See the Archibald F. Bennett papers collection held by the Family History Library, FHL Film #483,554, which includes his answer to my letter and his sources. I decided that more research was needed to be done on this line, however, to find better proof than Bennett had.

Sources I have used include "The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New", by Timothy Hopkins, p.170, for Olive and her family; Hebron, CT Birth, Marriage and Death Records; and correspondence with Marva Grove 3 Oct 1985.

If she was between ages 60 and 69 when the 1840 U.S. Census was taken in Florence, Oneida, New York, she apparently was born between 1771 & 1780 - which makes a birth in 1762 in Hebron, CT less likely and a birth in 1776 a stronger possibility.

Additionally, if she was a resident of Litchfield County, CT, she would be living in the same county as was her future husband, Abel Smith.

IT APPEARS, THEREFORE, THAT PROBABLY THIS OLIVE KELLOGG IS THE ONE BORN ON 15 FEB 1776 IN WATERTOWN, LITCHFIELD, CT., DAUGHTER OF MARTIN KELLOGG.
