OBITUARY: Santa Fe roofer Arden Kellogg dies By BOB QUICK, The New Mexican

Arden G Kellogg the man who for more than 40 years put roofs on the homes of thousands of Santa Feans died Monday of heart failure in La Residencia He was 86.

A native of Deer Trail, Colo., Kellogg moved to Santa Fe in 1930 and started his roofing business shortly after that. He retired in 1974.

Services for Kellogg will be held at 5 pm Thursday at the Scottish Rite Temple on Washington Avenue. They will be conducted by Rabbi Leonard Helman of Congregation Beit Tikva. A reception will follow at the Scottish Rite Temple. Kellogg is survived by his wife of 30 years Leah Kellogg, two daughters Norma Moore and Louise McDuffie and numerous other relatives. His oldest daughter Audre Kellogg DeBolt died in 1996.

Kellogg was working as a truck driver hauling food between Santa Fe and Denver - when he decided to settle down in Santa Fe in 1930.

Leah Kellogg said "He found employment with a roofer" she said "He said to Arden T will sell you this Studebaker truck for $5 and the business is yours' That was his auspicious beginning"

Kellogg later went on to work with developer and builder Allen Stamm. Stamm and Kellogg lobbied for the formation of a State Construction Industries Board which regulates the construction business in the state Leah Kellogg said.

Kellogg soon distinguished himself for the quality of his work; "He was considered the best roofer in the area" Stamm said. "He did a superb job. He put roofs on a lot of Stamm houses — probably over 1500 of them. They've held up remarkably well"

Jim Moore a friend of Kellogg said "He was a fine man and he sure employed a lot of people and trained a lot of people".

Brian McPartlon who owns McPartlon Roofing which is based in rail-yard buildings owned by Kellogg said Kellogg was his friend and mentor.

"He was like a father to me" McPartlon said "When I moved here he kind of adopted me".

Kellogg’s roofs McPartlon said were built to last and have done Just that — some of them for 40 years". I go on roofs that are 30 and 40 years old and I can tell that he did them” McPartlon said "His workmanship was outstanding".

Glen Burttram the secretary of the Scottish Rite Temple said Kellogg joined the Masonic Lodge in 1949.

"He was a good Mason a great guy and a good friend” Burttram said. Kellogg was on the board of the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club and was a member of Kiwanis Shriners, the Scottish Rite Temple and the Masonic Order. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was made a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 1986.

Arden G. Kellogg, born to Lewis and Pearl Soesbe Kellogg in Deer Trail, Colorado, September 27, 1910, passed away peacefully June 23, 1997 surrounded by loving family.

He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Leah Kellogg; brothers, C.R. "Bud" and wife, Jean of Denver, CO, and Karman and wife, Irma of Redding, CA; daughters, Norma Moore and husband, Richard of Espanola, Louise McDuffie and husband, Bill of Albuquerque; Leah's children, Barbara LaMont and husband, Armon of FL, and Morris Bell and wife, Jeannie, and Daniel Bell, all of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Doni DeBolt-Wallace and her husband, Rich, of Antioch, CA, and Russell McDuffie and his wife, Nancy of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Marisa and Trent Wallace, and Joshua Adam McDuffie, who was born on his Great-grandfather's 86th birthday; Nephews, Robert Kellogg of New York, Richard and Sue Kellogg of Del Mar, CA, Jerry and Ann Kellogg of Sherman Oaks, CA and Gene and Beverly Kellogg of Carlsbad, CA.

He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Audre Kellogg DeBolt, in November 1996.

Arden came to Santa Fe in 1930. In 1932, he founded Kellogg Roofing Service. Arden and Alan Stamm lobbied for the formation of a State Construction Industries Board, which would regulate all aspects of licensing and standards for the construction industry. After 42 years working as a roofing contractor, he retired with an impeccable and enviable reputation. Mr. Kellogg's license was 115. Arden was involved with the Board's of the Boy's Club, Kiwanis, Shriners, Scottish Rite, and the Masonic Order. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was made a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, 1986. Arden was a member of Congregation Beit Tikva, and was a lifetime member of Santa Fe Hadassah. His gentle wit, love of his family, and devotion and loyalty to his community will be sorely missed and long remembered.

Services will be held in the Masonic Temple located at 431 Paseo De Peralta at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 1997. Reception to follow at Masonic Temple.
