Biography

John Benjamin Kellogg, Sr., often called Benjamin was born 1783 in New London, Connecticut, USA. He moved to Kentucky where his son, John Benjamin II, was born. Many called John Benjamin II as Johnny. [1] By 1834 he moved his family to Gonzales colony, Coahuila y Texas, Mexico (also called DeWitt's Colony). He applied for a land grant under Green DeWitt's colony authorization. He received Lots 4 and 5, Block 10 in Gonzales town, inner circle on September 25, 1834 under the name Benjamin Kellogg, Sr. Friends called him John, or John Benjamin. The land granted to John Benjamin Sr. was 1 league and 1 labor.[1] [2][1]

Around 1835, Johnny married Sidney Gaston, daughter of Rebecca Warfield Gaston Davis, in Gonzales. [1]
Mr. Kellogg's son, Johnny joined the Gonzales Relief Force known also as "Immortal 32" when they responded to Colonel William Barrett Travis's letter asking for citizen's aid for the Alamo Defenders. They arrived in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas and sneaked in through the Mexican army on March 1, 1836. The young man was killed along with the other Defenders of the Alamo.[1]

As a result of the Alamo being defeated, Sam Houston recommended that people abandon their homes, belongings and escape from the immediate area. Sidney accompanied or joined Benjamin Sr and his family in loading a wagon and escaping from Gonzales. This was called Texas' Runaway Scrape.[1]

John Benjamin Sr.' passed away about Oct. 1836. [1] The probate records showed Benjamin as citizen of Gonzales Colony. "John Benjamin Sr.'s inventory was a league and labor of land, headright claim, plus a promissory note for $36 in military script owed to Drury McGee".[1]
