Notes

Note N2746James Kelly would have been 24 in 1830, and is not found as a head of household on the census in Sumner County. Edward Kelly is the only Kelly head of household on the 1830 census in Sumner County who has a 20-30 year old free white male living with him. Assuming that the Kellys moved directly to Sumner County from NC, Edward must therefore be James' father. But I cannot be absolutely certain about this.
Some of the ages are off in the 1820 census, however, the total number of people in the family is correct, so I think this is probably the right Edward.
The only Edward Kelly listed in NC in 1810 lives in Rockingham, County on the VA border. He has a son, daughter, and wife, who all match up with the people listed in later censuses. The same Edward is not found in that county in 1820. So, I believe this is the right Edward, and that he moved to TN between 1810-1820.
"Rockingham County was organized in 1785 with land from Guilford County. It adjoined Henry County, Virginia and Pitt¬sylvania County, Virginia on the south, and the settlers moved freely back and forth the state line as if in one community. Rockingham County was in the heart of Melungeon country in North Carolina." http://historical-melungeons.blogspot.com/2008/04/rockingham-north-carolina-early-records.html.
There is an Edward Kelley (Killey) in Guilford county in 1820, but he is too old (45+) All the Kellys in that county on that census are spelled "Kelley."
James alternately states that he was born in NC and born in TN, however, since it is noted that he is "very deaf" the 1880 entry for TN can be discounted.
There is no Kelly head of household in TN in 1810 with family members that that match the number and ages to be Edward's family.
If Edward was 40-50 in 1830, and 26-44 in 1810, he must have been born between 1780 and 1784.
Many NC Revolutionary war land grants were awarded to veterans and their descendants in the Sumner County area. It is quite possible that Edward was the son of a Revolutionary War soldier, and moved to Sumner County to claim the grant between 1810-1820.
An Edward Kelly married Rhody Perkins in Sumner County in 1837--this was probably Edward's son.
There is a Garret Kelly in Stokes County in 1810 who is probably related.
The first appearance of a Kelly on Sumner County tax list is Joseph Kelly in 1817- 47 acres on Bledsoe Creek. He was from Maryland, according to online sources. (Edward does not appear until 1822.) Joseph (1795-1857) married Hevelina Pentecost in 1816 and they had James L, Mary, Emeline, Joseph H, Nancy, John M and Cynthia or Samantha Kelly. So, those Kellys can be excluded from the record.
Charles Kelly married Elizabeth Lafferty in 1810, but there is no more information on him. A Patsy (Martha) Kelly married Joseph Biggs in 1803. She was born in 1776 in North Carolina. It makes sense that she would be Charles' sister, but who was their father? Neither given name is found in our Kellys so they are probably not directly related. There are no Kellys listed in the 1770-1790 census of the Cumberland Settlements. The 1790 and 1800 federal censuses do not exist.
1820 Sumner County shows only Edward, Joseph (from MD) and Henry (26-45). Probable brother, may be living with Edward in 1810. No other information--gone by 1830 census so may have died or moved away. There is a Henry Kelly found in Laurence County, Arkansas Territory in the 1830s who might be him--typical pattern of migration.

A John Kelly, 16-25 with a wife the same age and no children is the only other Kelly in the county. Probable brother.
Edward is found on Image 27. There are several Harrises and Martins living close by (Goinstown names.)
Stokes County 1810 census: Patrick, Garrett, and another James Kelly.
Note N3149There is one other Kelly in the county in 1800 (Isaac) and he does not have a son the right age to be Edward. Furthermore, Edward named his first son James.
Note N3154Listed on Sumner County tax list.

A Joseph Kelly is also listed.
Note N3155For marriage of Eliza Martin and Jefferson Rogers.

Edward's presumed brother, Joseph, married Hevelina Pentecost in 1816. So Edward may have arrived as part of a family group before that date.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edward by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edward:
