Hi John

Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results, you need to start with yourself and add sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. 24 hours later, your test will have populated on the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants, where others with potential matches may also appear.

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that others found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Let me know if you have any questions, and have fun!

Hi John. Welcome to WikiTree. I'm glad you found our community. If you invest the time there's a good chance your brick walls will start to break down. Check out the "cousin bait" pages like http://www.wikitree.com/treewidget/Kelly-3481/99 as you create profiles, and keep in mind that this is how WikiTree often works the best.

And now, for a few tips:

First, for profiles of living persons, click the privacy tab, check the red lock, then scroll down and save. WikiTree really cares about privacy.

Second, enter at least a death or birth date and place for each profile. If you don't know the exact date, estimate using the 'before' or 'after' option. When you search for duplicates, you'll understand why. Many haven't done this which makes matching much more difficult.

Third, try to document and include the source where you found the document for each profile you create, especially when you get further back in time. That will keep your part of the tree accurate.

This will take time, but it's a good goal to work toward and will make much sturdier branches for the worldwide tree.

Enjoy! :o)

I'm John Patrick Kelly of Rochester, N.Y. I'm researching Kelly's, Gibble's, Gill's, McManus's to name a few, from Philadelphia Pa. I've been banging my head against my brick wall for about 10 years. Perhaps Wikitree will solve all my mysteries!
