The first child, a daughter, born on July 30, 1881, was named Frances Marion in honor of Leona's father. In 1883 James Robertson was born, and in 1885 George Sommerville, but he lived less than one month. On July 10, 1887, Maud McLure was born at Mountain Spring. Marion, then six, took great pleasure in strolling the new baby down the street. Since it was the custom to christen a child about six months after its birth, the baby had no name; when neighbors asked Marion what her sister was called, she would reply, "Maud McLure," the name of a lady she admired.
