Source: #S57 Page: 5 TMPLT FIELD Name: Page VALUE 5 Note: Into this household occupied by Leona, Richard, Louisa [Louisa Catherine Vincent Bledsoe, Leona's mother], Cora [Cora Bledsoe, Leona's sister], and four servants, the young couple brought their children. The first child, a daughter, born on July 30, 1881, was named Frances Marion in honor of Leona's father. In 1883 James Robertson was born, and in 1885 George Sommerville, but he lived less than one month. On July 10, 1887, Maud McLure was born at Mountain Spring. Marion, then six, took great pleasure in strolling the new baby down the street. Since it was the custom to christen a child about six months after its birth, the baby had no name; when neighbors asked Marion what her sister was called, she would reply, "Maud McLure," the name of a lady she admired. Somehow the name stuck, and the Kellys recorded it in the family Bible. CONT After Maud Kelly's birth, five more children were born to the family. In 1889 a boy was born and died the same day; in November 1890 a girl was born, but died the following May; on November 22, 1891, Richard Bussey, Jr. was born [this is an error perpetuated by an inaccuracy in Maud Kelly's records since Richard often told his family he was born after midnight which he said was on November 23rd]; on May 1, 1894, Samuel Bledsoe; and the last child, William Milner, on June 5, 1898. Of the nine Kelly children, only five reached adulthood.
