John Scott was 7 years old when the family moved from Battle Creek, Michigan
where they were living when William was born.
John Scott Kelly was best friend with Leonard Taylor Olvey, Maggie's first
husband. The two were apparently a couple of rough characters and got into
some sort of trouble when young. Olvey killed 2 men before he was 21 years
old, fled to Kansas and was shot in a bar. Maggie had his first child (Annie)
in Alabama, then Frank in TN, and James in KS on the run. Her brother Austin
came to get her after Olvey was killed and brought her back to Bibb county AL
where she later married her husband's best friend, John Scott Kelly.
John Scott Kelly shot a black man in an argument in Georgia. The man did not
die but Grandpa Kelly fled to Gadsden, AL, probably to his brother William who
was living there at one time. The story is told that he was just
ahead of the posse and found a place to take his horse off the road and hide in
the woods while they passed by. Then he took a different fork in the road and
escaped. It is not known if he were married at that time or not, but his first
wife, Amy Bleu, and an infant son died in Gadsden, possibly in childbirth.
