Biography

Belfry lived in Guelph, Ontario at 1 Delhi Street with his parents, Charles Wesley Kelly and Submit 'Mittie' Sanderson Belfry, sister Ina and brother Fred. He attended Guelph Collegiate and University of Toronto graduating with a BA 1908 from Victoria College and MB 1910 from UofT Medical School. He played rugby, joined AKK fraternity and the YMCA at UofT. He married Marion Elise Miles in LaGrange, Cook, Illinois. The couple sailed on The Empress of India from Vancouver and landed in Shanghai March 27, 1912. Dr. Kelly practiced medicine at West China United Church Mission from1912-1926. He, his wife and three children took a furlough in 1918 and visited their families and spent their summer at the family camp at Guelph Bay on Ahmic Lake. After returning from West China to Canada in 1926 he lived for a time in Toronto, and then began a general practice as a family physician at 76 John Street South in Port Hope, Ontario, from 1927-1967. Belfry died In 1972 in Port Hope. His ashes are scattered at Ahmic Lake. Kelly-5367 23:36, 2 October N2014 (EDT)

Belfry and Marion Kelly memorial is on his father's (C.W. Kelly) gravestone at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Guelph along with his brother Fred’s.

"New Missionaries – KELLY Dr. Belfrey [sic] – A farewell was tendered on February 21, 1912, under the auspices of the Official Board of the Women’s Missionary Society, to Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Belfrey Kelly, on the eve of their departure for China to engage in missionary work.
