James was the oldest son of the five children born to James J. P. Kelly and his wife, Harriet C. Curran. Born in Pennsylvania about 1911, he was part of his family's famous dance troup, the "Five Dancing Kellys". They toured nationally. After the troup folded, the family took over a failing dance studio. James taught at the studio along with his siblings.
According to the obituary of his sister, Louise, he was one of two Kelly children who did not go on to the stage or to dance. Instead, he became an aeronautical designer.
It is not known if James Kelly, Jr. married or had children.
He died around 1989. [1]
