Biography

This is a preliminary draft and the information should only be used with caution
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Joseph was 13 when he arrived in Adelaide from Scotland. He worked the property, Cumberland Farm for many years and at the age of 25, he leased his own land at Woodside from the South Australian Company.
The previous year he had accompanied his brothers James and Adam and brother-in-law, Adam Adamson, to the Victorian goldfields.
In July 1857 he purchased 613 acres of land at Alma Plains. His property, Dunnette Farm, adjoined his brother Adam's property, Yacko Hill. During his many years at Alma Plains, Joseph was involved with the local Mechanic's Institute and the Alma Plains District Council. He served the latter organisation as Chairman, Treasurer and Auditor.
In 1869 land became available in the Mt Templeton district and Joseph purchased large acreages in order that his eldest two sons could farm the area.
During 1881, he leased Dunnette Farm to Mr Frank Mableson and moved to the Mt Templeton property. He was in ill-health at the time and his short stay there was a traumatic one. Early 1882 saw the deaths from consumption of his daughters Margaret Maxwell and Sarah and his wife, Agnes. He moved to Glenelg to try to improve his health and a month after the death of Sarah, he died of phthisis (tuberculosis[1]).

This is a works in progress and any assistance with information or source details would be very much appreciated.
