He was a Clerk of Military Rd, Semaphore, when he enlisted as a Private in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 29th Reinforcement Company on 10 April 1917. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board the HMAT A55 Kyarra on 7 September 1917 and again on the HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 2 November 1917. He returned to Australia on 15 June 1919. [1][2]
