Abner Kelly was the founder of Shelocta, Indiana County, Pa. A son of James and Sarah (Meek) Kelly, he was an early resident of Indiana where he served on the Boro Council in 1820. He built a second tannery there in 1823 and operated it for several years. In 1833, he moved to the site of Shelocta where he erected a water power tannery. In 1835, he laid out the "New Town of Shelocta" and offered lots for sale. The log house that he had built there was later removed and rebuilt adjoining the Clark House by the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County. He was active in the militia as captain of the Indiana County Hornets and in May 1842 was a candidate for Brigade Inspector, 2nd Battalion, 15th Division, Pennsylvania Militia. He was a Democrat and was elected Burgess of Shelocta in 1856-57. [1]
