"Troxel(l) Trails" Biography

Henry Troxel married Catherine Keltner, who was born July 23, 1791 and died June 16, 1879. The census records indicate that she also was born in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Ripley, var. Riplet) Keltner.

A letter was found, however, from Anna Etta Wagoner, a granddaughter of Catherine Wagoner. This letter was written to Dr. Troxell, and dated September 6, 1933. She stated that she had just returned from Illinois where she was visiting with her cousin David Troxel, and that he had given her the address of Dr. Troxell.

In this letter was complete information of her great-grandparents. Complete with dates of their birth and the dates of death, complete list of the children with dates of their birth. Apparently Dr. Troxell answered this letter as there was another letter from Anna Etta Wagoner dated September 27, 1933, to Dr. Troxell, which gave death dates of many of them. Also, she listed descendants of her grandmother Catherine Troxel Wagoner. She stated that she was using the information obtained from her great-grandmother, Catherine Keltner Troxel’s bible. She began this letter by saying “Kind Sir: Your letter received and perhaps I can send you a little more information than in last letter…” Then she proceeded to give the information, which we had been so long in trying to locate.

In the papers covering the settlement of the estate of Michael Keltner, in Union County, Indiana, mention is made of Henry and Catherine Troxel. In the 1810 census for Allegheny Township, Huntingdon County, Penn., on page 220a we find Henry Troxel and wife listed, no children. The next listing on the census was M. Kelkener (Michael Keltner), his father-in-law. He is found in Dayton Township, Montgomery County, Ohio in the 1820 census. He has moved between March 1813 and October 1815 from Penn. In 1820 he is living next to Henry Keltner, his brother-in-law.

In the 1830 census he is found in Madison Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, page 257, listed with his wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters. This corresponds to the list of children listed in the letter from Anna Etta Wagoner. In about 1836 Henry moves with his unmarried children to Carrol County, Indiana where is found in the 1840 census. Then in January of 1844 he dies.

Unlike his brother John who was born in the low land near Philadelphia and moved to the mountains of Blair and Cambria Counties of Pennsylvania, Henry was born in the mountains and moved to the low lands of Ohio and Indiana. The farm on which he lived in 1820 in Dayton Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, is now engulfed in the city of Dayton, Ohio. Henry and Catherine had the following children as recorded in Catherine’s bible:

  • Margaret Troxel, born November 29, 1810
  • Susanna Troxel, born February 21, 1813
  • Elias Troxel, born October 10, 1815
  • Elizabeth Troxel, born March 3, 1819
  • Sarah Troxel, born July 15, 1821
  • Jacob Troxel, born August 14, 1823
  • Henry W. Troxel, born May 9, 1825
  • Andrew Troxel, born March 1, 1829
  • David Troxel, born March 1, 1829
  • Catherine Troxel, born October 23, 1832
  • Nancy Troxel, born December 21, 1836[1]

Date of Death

Most sources list Catherine's year of death as 1879. However, an old Baptist Brethren publication called "The Pilgrim" from 1875 has a Catherine Troxel passing June 15th of that same year.[3] Further research is needed to see if this is the same person.
