Biography

Solomon Kemp, Jr. received lands in 1823 on a previous claim of his father, who was deceased at this time.[1]

This claim clearly establishes the elder and the younger both of Burke and later Screven County. The family did come from South Carolina, but not this younger Kemp,

Note

Soloman Kemp of Burke /Screven County is well documented living there in 1787. Screven County was formed from Burke County in 1795. He was deceased by 1823 when his son Soloman Kemp, Jr. obtained additional land. This younger Soloman Kemp may or may not be the one that moved to Cobb County. He was born in Screven County, Georgia so the assertions that he was born in Greenville, S.C. are incorrect. Family Search and Find A Grave are not primary sources, so this should be further researched by more interested parties.

Solomon was born in 1787 or 1791, He died in 1866, He was born in Greenville South Carolina, Then moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia, and drew land in The Cobb County Lottery. He married Sarah Clarinda "Clara" Benson, Daughter of Enoch Benson. They had twelve children.

Research Notes

There is another Solomon Kemp who is confused with this family. I will attempt to sort this out. One issue is birth date. Familysearch gives birth date as "6 March 1791" Find A grave gives date as "1787" This earlier date works with children associated with this profile. The 1850 United States census shows Solomon as 63 yrs old and wife Sarah as 50 yrs old. The 1860 Census shows Reuben Benson, Sarah Benson's Brother living with them.

Kemp-5629 (this profile), gives Sarah Freeman as a spouse [Freeman l 11882], another profile Kemp-5189 also gives spouse as Sarah Freeman [Freeman l 11089], but is a generation earlier.

The book cited below has a narrative of families of Cobb county, written a generation after the deaths of the pioneers, composed with interviews of children of the pioneers and grave records. I believe this more accurate.

This is the original sourcing for this profile. the ID is the same but spouse is not the same on FamilySearch, an alternate spouse is given as "Mary Martha Hairston" on Familysearch, she is born in 1834 so she could be a second wife, without a marriage date that cannot be corroborated.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Solomon by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Solomon:

Kemp-1339 and Kemp-634 do not represent the same person because: Soloman Kemp, Jr. was born in Burke County, as that is where his parents were living. This is documented with original sources. In order to merge then the place of birth needs to be changed, with special care taken to insure these are not two distinct Soloman Kemps.

Kemp-5629 and Kemp-1339 are not ready to be merged because: Kemps 8n this era seem to have a bit of confusion thst needs sorting. The Kemp daughter who married a Goodall may help unlock the correct configuration.
