Biography

Major in British Army. Grazier west of Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia from 1840.

William Kemp was born on 5 January 1782 at North Abbey, Cork, Ireland. [1]

He married Maria Susannah Blackiston on 26 November 1821 at St Margaret's of Antioch, Rochester, Kent, England. [2]

William died on 28 July 1856, at his residence, Boonongii, Macleay River, New South Wales, after a long illness of nine months, leaving a widow and nine sons and daughters. [3] [4] [5]

Note: Enlisted in 55th Regiment in Jamaica as Ensign in 1805. Transferred to 80th Regiment. Commandant of Port Macquarie convict settlement 1837-1838. Discharged 1840 at rank of Major.

Believed to have been sent from Ireland to Jamaica to live with his older brother c. 1790?.

Present at the taking of Santo Domingo which capitulated on th 9th July 1809, as Lieutenant attached to the flank Companies of the 55th Regiment on that Occasion. Major General Carmichael commanding.

Present with the supporting column of the army which xxx the French from the village of xxxx near xxxx as Lieut of 55th Regt xxxxx. Sir James Graham (now Lord Lynedock, Commanding).

Present at the attack Bergen Op Zoom with General Skevit's Brigade, as Lieut 55th of 8 Mar 1814, Sir James Graham (now Lord Lyndock) comanding.

In passage to England, volunteered cutting out at Key Mohair Island of Mazerat, 21 Jan 1812. The transaction was published and favourably represented by Captain Hercules Robinson R.N. commanding HM Ship Prometheus. Notice for Prometheus in consequence, and appears by letter from Sir H. Torrens, dated Horseguards 18 May 1812 to Lieut. General Leveson-Gowers and His present Most Gracious Majesty was pleased to confer the Honour, most condescendingly, of forwarding the above correspondence with Head Quarters of Duke of Clarence in the month of August 1814.
