Biography

David Kemp was born October 29, 1818 to Gilbert and Rebecca Kemp in Frederick County, Maryland. At age 7, he and his family relocated to Clifton, Ohio where his father worked for the Patterson family of Dayton, Ohio. He apprenticed for a clerkship with Jefferson Patterson at age 10 around 1828. Having completed his clerkship, he rejoined his family on the White River near Strawtown, Indiana. With the Indian Territory opening up for settlement, David made incursions into what was to become Tipton County, Indiana. He made arrangements with the local Indians for improvements involving trade and built a log cabin in 1840. By 1842, his father, mother and younger brothers and sister had joined him. He married Mary Ann Price in January 6, 1848. They had seven children. His applications for land patents came through in 1849. Enduring the hardships of the prairie and through much industry he began to realize his vision of farming and stock raising. He lost Mary Ann in 1862 and remarried in 1867 to Lorinda Eltzroth. When the railroad came through and the discovery of natural gas presented opportunity to improve his lot, he rose to the occasion and was successful. In 1874 he donated land to secure the railroad right of way and plotted the beginnings of a village. This was named Kempton in honor of his effort to bring prosperity to the region. David Kemp passed away January 28, 1890 and was buried with great ceremony.
