Jonathan was born in 1836 in the Bahamas. He married Anne E Morton. He immigrated to Key West, Florida in 1886.[1] He married Ann Eliza Bethel on 23 Jun 1896 in Key West.[2] Jonathan passed away in 1904, and was buried in the Key West Cemetery in Key West, Monroe County, Florida.[3]
Research Note
A Jonathan Kemp and wife Anne E Kemp were living in Key West in 1900. The census stated they had been married 43 years, although it also stated Anne was 46 years old! [1]
The confusion lies in the similarity of the names - first wife, Anne Elizabeth Morton, and second wife, Anne Eliza Bethel. Anne Elizabeth supposedly died about 1895, and Jonathan then married Anne Eliza about 1896. So the Ann in the 1900 census should be Ann Eliza. However, they were stated to have been married 43 years which is incorrect - it was only about 4 years.
