Biography

For most of her life Anne who was the first born of Henry Tacy Kemp (1821-1901) and Maria Williams (Wilson) Kemp (1816-1889), and more commonly known as Annie, lived at the Bay of Islands where she was born at Kerikeri on the 23 June 1844. She was baptised on the 12th September in the same year by Bishop Augustus Selwyn. Her early childhood years were spent in Wellington after her parents took up residence there in 1846. When the family returned to the North in the mid 1850's, Anne was about 10 years of age. In 1865 her family took up residence in Auckland. The following year on the 7th June 1866 she married Henry Edmonds (abt.1831-1906). He was the son of John Samuel Edmonds (1799-1865), the stonemason who had helped complete the construction of the Stone Store in the 1830's. This marriage was not approved of by the Kemp or Wilson families as they did not hold a high opinion of Edmonds Senior and his family. Annie and Henry were married at the Paihai Church with the first Bishop of Waipu, William Williams, officiating the ceremony. Annie and Henry settled to farming, apparently on or near to an old property of Henry's father. They had ten children. In 1886 a fire destroyed their stone house at Kerikeri Inlet, leaving Annie and Henry almost destitute of possessions. They went to live at Kara Kara where Henry died in 1906, aged 75 years, Annie died eight years later on 23 January 1914 at the age of 70 years, Kaikohe, New Zealand. Both were buried in St. James Churchyard at Kerikeri. The Stone ruins of the Edmonds' home, the oldest ruins in New Zealand, are now in the care of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
