Biography

Birth and Christening

Abraham James Kemp was born on November 4, 1795 in Fredricksburg, Addington, Upper Canada (Ontario). He was the son of John Kemp and Mary Dafoe.[1]

Abraham was christened on December 27, 1795 in Fredericksburg.[2]

First Marriage

Abraham was married to Sarah Fletcher on April 16, 1818, likely in Prince Edward County, Upper Canada (Ontario). They had the following children:[1]

  1. Waity Catherine Kemp
  2. Mary Ann Kemp
  3. Stephen J. Kemp
  4. William H. Kemp
  5. James Abram Kemp
  6. John L. Kemp
  7. Peter Evans Kemp
  8. Andrew Hait Kemp
  9. Sarah Jane Kemp
  10. Charles W. Kemp
  11. Wesley Kemp

Sarah passed away sometime after the birth of their youngest son in 1847.

Second Marriage

Abraham was married to Sophrona Goddard, the widow of John Chartrand, Ontario sometime before the 1851 Census of Canada.

In the said census, Abram, 55, was enumerated in Ameliasburg Township, Prince Edward County, Canda West (Ontario) with his wife, Saphrona, 44, and sons Abram Jr., 21, John, 17, Peter E., 14, and Wesley. John and Peter were absent when the enumerator visited. All members of the family were Wesleyan Methodist, save for his wife who was Roman Catholic.[3]

Sophrona passed away sometime in late 1880 or early 1881 as Abram is enumerated in the 1881 census as a widower living with his son Peter in the Township of Windham, Norfolk North, Ontario.[4]
