When Lord Gilbert Kennedy 4th Earl of Cassillis was born on 15 October 1541, in Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, his father, Laird Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl of Cassilis , was 26 and his mother,Margaret Kennedy, was 24. He married Agnes Montgomerie on 30 September 1556, in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 6 daughters. Gilbert Kennedy sat in the parliament of 1558 and fought in the Battle of Langside on 13 May 1568, on the side of Mary, Queen of Scots whom he continued to support during her imprisonment in England. Kennedy converted to the side of the Government in 1571 after being imprisoned for a short period. He registered for military service in 1568. He died on 14 December 1579, in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, at the age of 35, reputedly as a result of a fall with his horse. He was buried in Chelmsford, Essex, England.
