Evidence suggests that Ann Kennedy was born around 1735 [1] possibly in Ireland or as as suggested by Waddell, born in Augusta, Virginia.[2] When her family came to the U.S. is currently unknown.[3] Her parents are currently unknown.
Ann (Kennedy) Wilson Poage Lindsay McGinty brought the first spinning wheel to Kentucky. Widowed three times out of four marriages, her second husband made the first loom in Kentucky, and her third husband was killed in the Battle of Blue Licks.
Ann Kennedy Wilson Poage wove into cloth the first linen in Kentucky on a loom built by her husband Wiliam.[4]
Ann Kennedy first married John Wilson, who lived a short time and died by 1762. Ann married a second time to William Poage on 16 November, 1762. After he was killed by Indians in 1778, she married Colonel Joseph Lindsay on June 18, 1781. Lindsey and five other family members were killed at the Battle of the Blue Licks, Virginia, at the end of the Revolutionary War. She married a fourth time, to James McGinty. She died November 11, 1815 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.[3][1]
Currently, her parents are unknown.
According to the Annals of Augusta County, page 476:
As of 2001 "SERVICE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. IT APPEARS TO BE BASED SOLELY ON TRADITION. Children validated by DAR sources are Robert, Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary. "[8]
This is a link to a great story of the Bio of Ann Kennedy with illistrations about Fort Amanda, which was named after William Poague and Ann Kennedys daughter.[3]
According to Genealogies of the Kentucky families : [9] "After the death of Wm. Poage, the attorneys who settled the estate &c. in their papers spelled the name Pogue, according to the sound, as they were ignorant of the true spelling, hence the spelling of the name of that branch of the family to which Wm. L. Pogue belongs."
William’s widow, Ann Kennedy Poage, first married a John Wilson, who lived a short time and died by 1762. Ann then married William Poage, 16 November, 1762, and after he was killed in 1778, married Colonel Joseph Lindsay, June 18, 1781, and he, together with five others of her family was killed at the Battle of the Blue Licks, Virginia, at the end of the Revolutionary War. She married a fourth time to James McGinty. She died November 11, 1815 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
John and Ann Kennedy Wilson had one daughter named Martha, who is said to have died at 3 or 4 years of age.
Ann was certainly not lucky with husbands. Joseph Lindsay, however, must have been quite a man to not only marry the widow, but to take on her house full of children. Colonel Lindsay took on seven Poages to raise, ages 17 to 4, only to be killed three years later, leaving Ann a widow yet again.
The eldest Poage child, Elizabeth, was about thirteen years old when her father was killed. She was eleven years old at the time of the family’s migration from Virginia to Kentucky when she wrote the following, according to the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Volume 6. It is from The Draper Collection of Kentucky manuscripts, owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society. It has been published in Bulbert’s Historic Highways, Vol. 6, pp. 117-118.
