Aeneas Sage Kennedy was born in Lairg, Scotland and baptised there 13 February 1815. [1] He went to Hamilton, Upper Canada (now Ontario, Canada) where he formed a partnership with James Parker, a cousin, in 1840. Their business was called Kennedy, Parker & Co., and was a general wholesale business. [2] Their listing in The Canada Directory 1851 under "Dry Goods Merchants, Wholesale Only."
A meeting was held at the head office of the Canada Life Assurance Company in Hamilton, for the purpose of incorporating The Ontario Marine & Fire Insurance Company was incorporated on the 30th of August 1849. The Committee of Management nominated at this meeting included, Aeneas S. Kennedy. [4]
Aeneas married Harriet Russell Bown in her stepfather's home in Brantford on 24 January 1844. [5] About 1848, they lived in the impressive new house Æneas had built in Hamilton and called "Wilderness House." [6] Wilderness House was destroyed in 1853. [7] Another impressive house, "Ballinahinch" was built for Aeneas Sage Kennedy located at 316 James Street South, Hamilton
Æneas died about 1854, leaving Harriet with three children. He left the bulk of his estate in trust to his wife (as long as she remained unmarried) and his children once they attain the age of 20. He appointed his wife guardian for the children, but Colin Ferrie and Andrew Steven and wife were to be guardians if his wife should remarry.
