Being an early New Zealand born child, and living until the late age of 96, there were numerous newspaper articles about her childhood experiences in Akaroa and the Canterbury area. However, the contradictions in these stories do not help to clear up how her parents arrived, with several saying that they arrived in Wellington on the Aurora in January 1840, but at least one[1] supporting the family legend of her father arriving from America on a whaling boat in 1838.
