Biography

Sarah Kenworthy Haines was born Oct. 26, 1838 in Henry County, Indiana. She was the daughter of William Kenworthy and his first wife, Asenath Patterson. They were a Quaker family.

After her mother died, her father remarried, to Mary Ann Spencer. The family moved west to Iowa. She married Benjamin Haines in 1857 in Iowa. They had the following children:

Albion Haines (1858 - 1932) Mary Olive Haines Gragg (1866 - 1954) William B Haines (1871 - 1956) Luther B. Haines (1873 - 1950) Ella Haines Mace (1875 - 1960) Emma May Haines (1875 - 1970)

She is recorded in 1850 in Dudley, Henry, IN; in 1860 married in Richland, Jasper, IA with husband and one child; in 1870 in Richland, Jasper, IA with husband, 3 children, widowed father and half-brother Amos.

She is recorded in 1910 in Forest Grove, Washington, OR, widowed and living with her son William B. Haines. She reported 9 children born, with 6 living.

She died in 1925 in Oregon.

Notes

Sarah had two brothers. One brother, Joseph, died as an infant in 1842 in Indiana. Her other brother, James Kenworthy, is buried in Bicklehaupt Cemetery in Huntsville, Columbia Co., WA. Sarah also had a younger half brother and half sister from her father's 2nd marriage. Her half brother, Amos Kenworthy, is also buried in Crescent Grove Cemetery. Amos married Sarah's husband, Benjamin Haines', sister, Matilda Haines. Brother and sister married brother and sister. Sarah's half sister, Phebe, married Zina Dowd. Phebe and Zina lived out their lives in CA. Phebe died in Alameda Co., CA. in 1923. I have as yet been unable to find where she was buried.

It is possible she was born in Rush County, IN, where her parents were married, rather than Henry, IN where her father remarried.

Census records for 1880, 1900, 1920 still needed.
