Biography

If Conrad Kem was the prototype of the immigrant in the great influx from Germany, his oldest son, Adam, Sr., is a good example of the early American pioneer. Bom in 1762 in Rowan County, N. C, he left as a young man, going up through the Cumberland Gap into Nicholas County, Ky. After residence there for some twenty years, he migrated into the southern part of Indiana and died in Monroe County, near the small town of Stanford, Ind., in 1838. Four children of Adam Kern Sr settled in Lawrence County, IN not far from what is now the city of Bedford. These were Abraham and William, the older sons, Anna and Elizabeth, the second and third daughters. Also settling here were three children of Simeon Kern, Adam's brother. These were Alexander J., Phebe and Edward. Today, descendants of these various branches still live in the Bedford area, most knowing they are related "way back", but not knowing exactly how. (1)

Marriage 2 Mary Anderson b: 1770/1780 in Monroe Co, Indiana

Married: 20 Oct 1825 in Lawrence Co, Indiana 1 "Adam Kern, Sr. married a second time on Oct. 20, 1825, his bride being Mary Anderson of Lawrence County, Ind., apparently a widow (see the marriage agreement, page 2k this booklet). The MG (minister of God) who performed the ceremony was Abraham Kem, Adam's son." (Lawrence County Clerk's records, Book A, page 138.)

"According to information about Adam Kern's grave, which is located in section 22, Van Buren Township, Adam lived on this spot when he died and was buried there at his request so as to be in 'the beloved fields and woods where he hunted and trapped.' Isaac Dunlap, current (1965) owner of the farm on which the grave stands, says he understands the entire field surrounding the grave was once a grove of sugar maple trees and when he plows a certain spot, some 100 yards from the grave, he finds evidence of a sugar maple camp." His grave is known as Kern Cemetery in Monroe County, Ind. records. However, it is a single grave. The farm of Isaac Dunlap, whose house faces State Road 45, just northeast of the small town of Stanford. The grave is in an open field, near a fence and not far from a road know as the Dunlap Road, is also about 2-300 yards from the Dunlap barn. The grave us surrounded by a stone curbing over which is laid a stone slab 5 ft. long by 2 1/2 ft. wide. This type of marker is unusual for Monroe County, possibly was planned by someone with memories in the east or in Europe. Actually the stone is to have been placed there, not by family, but by a friend, at least this is the story recalled by Isaac Dunlap as having been told by a neighbor who was a Civil War veteran and who had heard the story from a friend. The site of the grave (said the friend) was among the beloved fields and woods where Adam hunted and trapped and where he was buried at his own request." DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Adam by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Adam:
