Biography

John was born about 1741. He was the son of Adam Kern and Maria Michel. The Tuesday, October 28, 1823 issue of the Western Carolinian a newspaper from Salisbury, North Carolina

At his residence, six miles east of Salisbury, on the 20th inst, after a lingering disease, Mr John Kern, sen. in the 80th year of age. He has left an aged companion, (with whom he had lived "in peace and quietness" fifty four years) and a respectable family of children, to lament the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father. Mr Kern was a good citizen and a worthy man, in all the relations of life, at an early age he was admitted into full communion with the Church of Christ, and continues as a faithful servant till his death.

Last Will and Testament of John Kern, Sr.

In the name of God amen I John Kern of Rowan County No. Carolina being of perfect health and of sound mind memory and understanding do make publish and declare this my last Will and testament in manner following. First of all. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Catherine Kern the use of all the household and kitchen furniture and all the stock of horses, cattle hogs and sheep of which I may be possessed for and during the term of her natural life and after her death whatever she may leave to be sold by my Executor and the proceeds be divided among all my children and my grandson Willie Hudson share and share alike. Also I give and bequeath to my said wife Catherine the use of the house I now live in together with the garden, stable and spring during the term of her natural life and after her demise I give and devise the said house, garden, stable and spring to my son Peter Kern his heirs and assigns forever. Also I give and bequeath to my said wife Catherine fifteen bushels of wheat, fifty bushels of corn, one load of hay, two hundred weight of pork, half a barrel of salt, necessary fire wood and ten dollars worth of sugar and coffee which as annually to be provided for and delivered to her by my son Peter Kern each and every year during her natural life which is more particularly mentioned in my devise to my said son Peter Kern. In the second place. I give and devise the tract of land whereon I now live lying on Crane Creek and adjoining the land of my sons Daniel and Peter Kern consisting of estimation about one hundred and seventy acres to my affectionate son Peter Kern and His heirs and assigns forever. In consequence of this liberal devise to my son Peter and my putting him into the immediate use occupation and possession of the land he is to punctually to provide, furnish and supply me annually during the lives of my wife Catherine and myself with thirty bushels of wheat, one hundred bushels of corn, two carts of hay, four hundred weights of Pork, one barrel of salt, twenty dollars worth of sugar and coffee and necessary fire wood. But in the event of the death of my wife Catherine or myself then it is my will and desire that my son Peter Kern annually provide furnish and supply to the duration during life only one half of each of the above specified articles as is particularly noticed in my bequest to my wife Catherine. In the third place. I notice hence that I have by a deed of Bargain and sale and for a small consideration convey it to my son Daniel Kern the tract of land whereon he has lived so that I think I have made a good aportion for my son Daniel as I have for my son Peter or better. If there should be any residue or remainder of my Estate It is my will and desire that it should be equally divided among all my children and I hereby appoint my son Peter Kern Executor of my last will and testament hereby revoking all former will or wills by me herefore made. In wherefor whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of June 1818. Signed sealed published and declared by the sd John Kern as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who have hereto set unto our names as witnesses in presence of testator and each other.
