Biography

Ireland Native
Andrew Kerr was born in Ireland.

Andrew was born in 1840 in Ballyhenry, Carnmoney Parish, County Antrim. He was the son of Samuel Kerr and Elizabeth Scott.

Between the 1860s and the end of the century he was farming, possibly his father's land at Ballyhenry, but retired by around 1900. His father passed away in 1885 leaving two farms to Andrew (a third went to his brother Samuel). Andrew would also inherit the family home on the death of his mother.[1]

It is uncertain what happened between 1885 and 1901 but by the latter year Andrew was retired and lodging with in-laws.

In 1901 and 1911 he was staying at the Auld farm in Ballyhone. James Auld was his brother-in-law having taken Annie Kerr as his second wife in 1876. He described himself as a retired farmer.[2][3]

After James Auld Sr died in 1914, his son married in 1915 and started his own family in 1916. Many of the family members living in the Ballyhone farm would have needed to find somewhere else to live. Andrew repaired to Carrickfergus town.

He passed away still a bachelor aged 78 at All Brides Street in Carrickfergus in 1917, with his niece Margaret McQuitty present at his death.[4]

He left his estate (which totalled nearly £1300) to his nephew David McFee of Ballydonaghy.[5]. It seems quite a substantial amount, so it is possible he sold the farms (or one of them, or the family home) and spent his retirement living modestly.

Research Notes

I was not expecting Andrew, lodging with his sister's family, to be his father's main beneficiary. I would love to know what transpired between his inheriting the farms and moving in with Annie. Perhaps the farms will pop up again when I look more closely at his brothers.
