Charles enlisted in the NZ expeditionary forces in Auckland New Zealand in 1914 and was injured at Gallipoli. He was sent back to New Zealand and was discharged from the army. He travelled back to Australia and re-enlisted with the AIF but there was a note on his enlistment papers that he was not to be sent overseas. He worked as a driver after the war.
