James was born in about 1744 in Lonmay, Aberdeen ,Scotland. He is the son of Gustavus Kerr and Elisabeth Macky. He was christened on 27 Jan 1744.
Per The Historical Atlas Augusta County, Virginia, by Joseph A Waddell and Jed Hotchkiss[1], 1885, Chicago, The Kerr and Dunlap Families, p 45.: Scottish Kerr brothers, Robert, William and James all came to America in 1763. James to the Carolinas, Wm to Ohio and Robert about 40 miles from Philadelphia.
It is now believed these brothers are this James, his brother William (b. 1755) and brother Robert whereas earlier accounts/research felt it was his uncles with the same names. However, his uncle Robert did in fact immigrate to the United States by way of Philadelphia and settled in Augusta County, Virginia.
