Disambiguation

Rosemary Haber I thought the following might clear up some of the confusion. BEWARE - Two different Families!

WILLIAM THOMAS KESTERSON & FAMILY - "The Iowa Branch"

Actually there were "two" branches of the Kesterson line that settled in the same area of Iowa. They spent a lot of time back in the old days trying to figure out how they were related, but it wasn't until the mid 1970's that we finally were able to prove two different families.

The first group to arrive here around 1844, was William Thomas Kesterson and his wife Hannah M. Ulred. William was the son of Sylvester Welch & Elizabeth (Johnson) Kesterson. I believe Sylvester was born in Augusta, Virginia and he was the son of John Kesterson born 4 December 1842, in Northumberland County, Virginia. As best as can be determined John deserted his wife and children in Augusta, Virginia sometime before 1809 because we found a marriage license for this particular John and Elizabeth Bollen, in Jefferson County, Ohio. We were able to tie John back to the family in Augusta, Virginia by a will he left in Jefferson, Ohio where he named each child - leaving them $1.00 "if they so desired". There were no children between Elizabeth Bollen and John.

John's first wife is believed to be Elizabeth Rebecca Whitman whom he married 29 Nov. 1783, in Rockingham County, Virginia. Through various census records its is seen that "Rebecca" Kesterson, always a widow, was in close proximity to all of the known children that John named in his will. They were:

1) Benjamin Kesterson born about 1784 - Married Elizabeth Nancy Wood.

2) Sylvester Welch Kesterson born April 1785, married Elizabeth Johnson, settled in Anderson County, Tennessee.

3) Hazzard Kesterson born about 1787, married Elizabeth Grass, settled around Hamilton County, Tennessee.

4) Willis Kesterson born 12 Feb 1792, married Catherine Gregory, remained in Virginia.

5) Jenny Kesterson born about 1794.

6) Nancy Kesterson born 1796, married Jesse Wood.

7) Sarah Kesterson born 1798.

The Second Family line includes William Harvey Kesterson (1762 - 1837) born in Faquier County, VA and spouse Mary "Polly" Bailey. John Smith Kesterson (1712 - 1752) Is William Harvey's Great Grandfather.

I hope this gives a little bit of insight to these families.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

My ancestor John Kesterson, 1807, wife Malinda Dorsey. Michael Price son of Robert Price and Mary Anderson married John and Malinda’s daughter, Annis Kesterson, their son John Thomas Price married Louella Adeline Blackwood, she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Blackwood and his 2nd wife, Mary Malissa Stephenson. John Thomas Price and Louella Adeline Blackwood were my maternal Great Grandparents. John and Louella were not only husband and wife, but they were also cousins. John Thomas’s Mother was the daughter of John Kesterson, and Louella Adeline’s Father’s Mother was Rebecca Kesterson the sister of John Kesterson. Took me awhile to figure that one out, and it gets more tangled as we go.

Bottom line I do no believe that William Kesterson and Mary Polly Bailey are the parents of my John (1897) Kesterson that married Malinda Dorsey. I see that everywhere, but I think it is a result of people copying what they see posted without regard for proper proof.

Christine Kesterson Walters, now deceased, was a long term well respected Kesterson researcher, she published Kesterson Kollection Newsletter for years. She told me years ago when the William Kesterson Mary Polly Bailey fairy tale first appeared that it was incorrect, she knew the woman that originally posted it, she said after the woman posted it she realized it was wrong, but like many things that get posted to the internet and then turn out to be incorrect it is impossible to retract.

Christine Walters also said that William Kesterson that married Mary Polly Bailey had left a will and in it he named all of his children and my John Kesterson, 1807 was not among them.

Also Annis Kesterson, wife of Michael Price and her adult Children, applied for an Indian Role number on the first Dawes role. In it they were claiming Cherokee blood from John Kesterson’s Mother and they named her as Mary Goff, not Mary Polly Bailey. Unfortunately they did not tell us the name of John’s Father. His Father may have been a William, I just have seen no proof that makes me believe it was William Kesterson and Mary Polly Bailey and until I do I do not accept that as anything more than a mistake from more than 20 years ago. That First Dawes role was thrown out and my relatives did not get the word that they needed to reapply until after the deadline had passed. They had a lawyer and apparently the Indian name was Keystone and they found that out after the fact also..

My information was requested by me from the National Archives and was a copy of the original.

I’d love to see proof positive but so far I have not. If anyone has proof, great I’d love to see it.

Yes they may have been in Green County TN, known each other, etc, but that is not proof that is neighbors, but not proof they are related.
