John was born in 1847. He was elected Sheriff of Tipton in 1884, served 2 terms, "a man of sterling honesty and many friends" (Tipton Daily Tribune, 28 Apr 1908). Held title of Street Commissioner of Tipton. He passed away in 1908. Died as a result of prostate surgery. Buried at Catholic cemetery in Tipton, Indiana.
I believe that the middle name that is attached to this person is incorrect. At least I've never seen any documentation that my 2nd great-grandfather had the middle name, Dominic. Likely he didn't have a middle name, though I have seen the middle initial 'W' in various trees as well. But all documentation that I've seen only has John Kiefer or Sheriff John Kiefer.
If there is documentation for either this name "Dominic" or the middle initial "W", I would very much like to know. What I believe happened instead was that someone either conflated the middle name of his father (Josias Dominick) or the middle name of his brother (Francis Dominick) or of his son (John Dominic); or someone just made the assumption that he could have had the same middle name since so many others in the family did.
Again, if you have evidence that this was his middle name, please let us all know the sources.
