On the 8th of November, 1899, Martha and John Webster had a daughter in Martin County, Indiana. [1] She was named Zella May. In June of 1900,[2] Martha was living with Thomas (25) and Dicie J. (25) Walls in Elmer Township, Daviess County, Indiana. Martha "Addie" is listed as a sister-in-law to the head of the household. She is 20 years old and single. Zella (listed as Jella) is listed as a niece, 7/12 months old.
Addie married Granville Gray on the 13th of July, 1901 in Daviess, Indiana.[3] Together Addie and Granville had 8 children.[4] Seven of them (plus Zella) were listed on the 1920 Census:
Clarence (18) - born 1902 in Indiana
Pearl (15) - born 1905 in Arkansas
Lafe (12) - born 1908 in Arkansas
Dewey (9) - born 1911 in Arkansas
Opal (6) - born 1913 in Arkansas
Slee (4) - born 1916 in Arkansas
Gracie Lee (1) - born 1919 in Arkansas
Zella (20) - was listed as a daughter to Granville, born 1900 in Indiana.
In 1930, Granville and the family are living in Bryan, Arkansas. Zella, Clarence, Pearl and Lafe have married. Lavern (9), born in 1921 has been added to the family.[5]
Granville passed away in 1934, leaving Addie a widow with 5 children still at home.[6]
In 1940[7] Addie is living in Jones, Greene County, Arkansas. She is 59 years old. Living with her is her son Dewey (28) who is single. The census shows that Dewey only completed the 2nd grade. He had been unemployed for a period of 120 weeks. He was currently employed by the WPA as a laborer doing road construction. He worked 15 hours the week prior to the census. He worked a total of 30 weeks in 1939, earning $300. Also living with Addie was her youngest son, Laverne, who was 19 and single. Laverne had completed the 3rd grade. He was privately employed as a farm laborer and had worked 25 hours the previous week. He worked 25 weeks in 1939 and earned $200.
In 1950[8] Addie (60) is living in Jones, Greene County, Arkansas. Still living with her is her son Dewey (40) who is working as a day laborer on a farm. Also living with her is her grandson Enoch, who is one of Pearl's children. Enoch (25) is a mechanic in a garage. His parents and siblings are living in California. [9]
Martha Addaline died on the 11th of February, 1953, at the age of 72.[10] Cause of death was carcinoma of the lungs.[11] She was buried in the Jones Ridge Cemetery in Delaplaine, Greene County, Arkansas.
